This is Colleen posting for my Dad, David. He donates blood on a regular basis. He has done it for as long as I remember. He has been asked to fill smaller bags for babies and he's also had them rush his donation to the hospital as soon as he was done giving during blood shortages. Anyone who knows my Dad knows that it is just part of his nature to help people and giving blood (despite the immediate bruises and ripped skin that he often suffers due to his bad skin) is just one of the many many ways he gives of himself. He's a good guy!

Initially I wasn�t going to attach a photo. But when I saw the color of the bandage that the nurse had chosen for my arm I had to share it. Catharine�s orange not only washed away the maudlin, it left me with a smile. The joy she put into this world works wonders - even for those who didn�t get to meet her.

Back in 2005, a few days before Christmas, my father was hit by an SUV as he worked outside (he is a land surveyor). He was standing out on the sidewalk, drafting the house on his yellow notebook, and the man -- who was traveling straight on the road -- swerved up onto the sidewalk and hit him in the ride side. I'm afraid of sounding cliche, or like a lifetime movie, but the reality is that everyone has a loved one who is lost or comes close to being lost. My father survived the accident, but needed a lot of blood and time to recover. Now, he's doing extremely well -- and he's in great shape (he works out more than me...). When Bushi (as that is all I know her as, really) put out a call for blood donations, there wasn't any hesitation. This is a great cause, and a great remembrance. I plan on keeping up and donating as frequently as I can.

I donated because life at NDC was a million times funnier with Catharine around. If anyone else had said "mustard makes me sweat" it would have just been an odd statement. But coming from Catharine, it turned into a funny memory - even ten years later. Plus, I got a pink bandage!

Catherine & I went to college together and I have very fond memories of late nights studying...wait, who am I kidding? We were watching X-Files, getting punchy and saying silly things that ended up on the quote wall, harassing Darcy or Mary or someone else from Alumnae 1. It was also nice to have someone around who was short like me; for those of you who are also vertically challenged, you know what I mean. Gina Dorazio, also a NDC alum, was in town visiting so I roped her into coming with me. It was the very first time she had ever donated, which surprised me. Then I realized she barely meets the weight requirements [insert your epithet of choice re: skinny people]. The reason I only have her picture donating is because by the time her paperwork and interview w/ the nurse was finished, I was practically done. And I forgot to give her the camera. So Darcy, thanks for telling me about this. It was an honor to participate and a great way to remember such a great girl.

Although we went to NDC together, I did not know Catherine very well; however, she was friends with my good friend Hannah. I happened to be visiting Hannah so she roped me into donating. It was my first experience. I had tried to donate in the past but usually ran into some obstacle that prevented me from being "eligible." It was an interesting experience, since they had trouble finding a vein but I will try to continue with it in years to come.
